Both PRP (Platelet-rich Plasma) and Exosomes are treatments used for skin rejuvenation and regeneration. Both deliver anti-aging benefits, collagen production, hair-loss, and help create younger looking, more vibrant and healthy skin tissue.
What is PRP Therapy?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma and is obtained from an individual’s own blood to promote collagen formation and cell regeneration. The plasma contains high concentrations of platelets, growth factors, and cytokines to help cells turnover quicker. PRP can be applied topically and injected into the skin to address concerns such as fine lines, acne scarring, skin laxity, and pore size. When PRP is applied topically onto the skin and microneedled, it helps boost skin cell turnover to soften skin texture and promote faster healing time. PRP can also be injected into the scalp to help with hair loss. The plasma-rich platelet stimulates and strengthens hair follicles, which results in thicker and healthier hair.
A small amount of blood is drawn from an individual’s arm. The blood is then placed into a centrifuge and spun down to obtain the platelet-rich plasma from the blood. This is then applied or injected onto the skin or scalp.
What are Exosomes?
Stem cell therapy has been a hot topic for years in regenerative medicine and they have recently made their way into the beauty industry. An Alternative for PRP, Exosome therapy is an advanced treatment that is being called out as the newest frontier in the field of cell therapy. Exosomes are described as extracellular vesicles that are released by stem cells that may be derived from human bone marrow, or from PRP. Exosomes are responsible for cell to cell communication and for facilitating the exchange of RNA and other important proteins between cells. They are taken from human adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells in FDA registered labs, and contain RNA to promote tissue repair and skin regeneration. By applying exosomes directly to the tissue, we bypass the long cellular division process and skip straight to the replenishment and regeneration of the treatment area. Ideal for use during microneedling, benefits of Exosomes include a reduction in skin texture, age spots, improved brightness and hydration and collagen production. This complex is also full of other potent ingredients that have been FDA proven to enhance healing and to have anti-aging benefits including: growth factors, peptides, coenzymes, minerals, amino acids, vitamins, and hyaluronic acid.
Which treatment is right for you?
Both treatments are similar and require little to no downtime, however, there are some differences that are important to consider when choosing which treatment is right for you. Exosome treatment works like PRP by using the same concept of growth factors to produce collagen growth. The main difference is that these growth factors are lab derived, not taken from the patient’s own blood. The Exosome serum, which includes growth factors, messenger RNA, micro RNA, and cytokines contains a higher concentration of growth factors. Because Exosomes are lab derived, they do not
contain debris of unnecessary ingredients in the serum that patient-extracted PRP serums will have. For this reason, many choose Exosome therapy instead of PRP therapy. However, many people like PRP therapy because it uses their own blood, so there is less chance of risk involved from using a serum that is foriegn to the body.
